Anarchist critique of 48 Laws of Power: Law One

Updated: Mar 14

"Never Outshine the Master"

I always felt the 48 laws of power was a self-help guide for would-be sycophants, a call to hide your talents just to keep someone else's ego intact. If you ever wanted to stifle innovation and ensure that true greatness never sees the light of day, Robert Greene has the blueprint.

His first law is ‘Listen to your Parents’ re-branded for Adults, a call to enforce a perceived authority and assign a master is what stops us from challenging a broken system.the Truth is; if you outshine the master, they don’t deserve to be one.

And you, you surrender the control to others. The only ones who truly hold power are those who can alter the course of your life: parents, judges, law enforcement, politicians. They possess the authority to shape your destiny, whereas others merely wield influence.

Those you perceive as superior are simply reflections of your own self-imposed limitations.

When you view yourself as ‘inferior’ to others on the hierarchy, you are forced into compliance; to endure and smile through inconveniences and conflict by invisible social cages, and since society’s hierarchy is already stacked against most of us, the moment we show even a fraction of justified anger, we’re met with being labelled crazy, police sirens & job termination.

I coined the term ‘Rage Tax’ for it because Defiance isn't free. It’s a privilege to be able to express it, and some of us can’t afford it.

But to change the world is to first change yourself, you have to dare to defy.

I’m warning you now though, you’ll stand alone, but you were also never truly surrounded. If this truth makes you bitter or angry, turn back now, because the lessons I’ve learned aren’t for the faint-hearted. I will show you how we’ve been misled from the start, that saviours are myths, and how ‘help’ is a tale spun for adults, a fairytale meant to deny the desperation that haunts us all.

Your only power lies in embracing all this. But to do that, you’ll have to face the harshest truth that’s been staring back at you your whole life, a truth that doesn’t care if you want to look away: Being afforded humanity is a luxury.

It should never have been a luxury, but it always has been. Since the beginning, our worth, our dignity, and even our right to be seen as human have been tied to how the world, and the people around us, choose to perceive us. Humanity has always been treated as a prize awarded based on shallow perceptions, when it should have been a birthright.

So don’t try to feed me the self-love clichés. We all know the truth is whatever the majority decides it is, regardless of actual reality. No matter how much we convince ourselves that self-love is enough, that our worth isn’t tied to others, it’s a lie. The world’s perception of us has real consequences, it affects our opportunities, safety, dignity, and even survival. You can love yourself all you want, but if the world perceives you as ‘powerless,’ it will treat you that way. This Conditional humanity decides your opportunities and worth in ways self-love alone can’t fix.

And that’s why my tragedy; and yours, is only valuable to others when they can gain something from it.

My name is Bryton Gore, and I’ve been labelled a threat, loser, crazy, but my life isn’t about staying in those labels, it’s about what happens when you stop playing by the rules, and in this series; Anarchist critique of 48 Laws of Power, you will find out why people in Power call me crazy.

Burn brighter than their sun, let them call it madness, let their labels be background noise.
